Can you make money on Fiverr?

It’s a question I get asked weekly. Sometimes daily. Inflation is at a mindboggling 8.3% in the United States and 6.7% here in my own home country, Canada. It cost me $60 to fill up my car with gas yesterday — and I only got a half tank!

Life is expensive.

So, it’s understandable that people are looking for easy ways to make money online.

And while I don’t fancy myself much of a coach, I have been helping people get started making money online since 2017. Teaching English as a second language over Zoom, publishing eBooks and journals on Amazon KDP, blogging, and now, offering freelance writing services on platforms like Fiverr, Upwork, and Legiit…these are all easy and fun ways to bring in a little extra income every month.

The best part?

You can do it part-time. For myself, freelance writing on Fiverr burns up about 5–10 hours per week. Not bad, all things considered.

“I’ve heard Fiverr is cheap. Can you actually make $2000 per month freelance writing?”

Yes.

I have helped people start earning anywhere in the ballpark of $25 — $100 a week on Fiverr. But let’s aim higher. Listen, I will be real with you, fellow hustlers. To make between $1000 and $2000 a month on Fiverr consistently, it takes more than hard work or luck. A LOT MORE.

You need to think of yourself as a ⭐ business owner ⭐

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again:

Stop thinking of yourself as somebody with a side hustle, and instead start acting like the CEO of your own business!

According to this report by Priceonomics, “96.3% of sellers on Fiverr make less than $500 per month, with the majority (70%) making less than $100. It’s estimated that only 1% of sellers are earning $2,000 or more per month.”

Of course, we all want to be in that 1%, right?

So, as I wrap up my orders for the month of April and look ahead to May and June, here are my best two tips (as a part-time freelance copywriter) to help you hit those Fiverr income goals, whatever they may be.

1. Be Choosey. Only Work with Awesome Professional Clients Who Value Your Skills

I once edited 4000 words for $10. Seriously. What a joke, right?

I’ll share my story. I had just signed up for Fiverr, and nothing happened for 30 days. No orders. Zero action. Just a bunch of spam messages and weirdos looking for a date.

Then, along came a buyer (let’s call him “Cheap Charlie”).

Cheap Charlie was great to work with. He was smart, funny, communicated professionally and was always extremely appreciative of the work I did. But after two weeks together, I began to dread our projects. Not because they were boring or difficult. Actually, editing 4000 words for spelling/grammar mistakes was easy-peasy.

But as you can imagine, after 14 days of grueling editing for pennies, trouble started to brew. It was time to raise my prices. I said so.

Guess what happened next? He dropped me faster than a melting snow cone in hell!

Lesson Learned: Be Picky About Who You Work With

I share this story to illustrate a few things.

1. You deserve to be fairly compensated for your efforts ✔️
2. If a client lowballs you, PASS ❌
3. If a client has poor/rude communication, PASS ❌
4. If a client has unreasonable expectations, PASS ❌

Professionals will trust in your expertise. They will approach you in the spirit of collaboration. They won’t try to haggle prices and will respect your time. In return, you will provide exceptional services that are delivered by the deadline as agreed upon.

Don’t waste your energy on folks who refuse to see your value as a freelancer.

2. Find a Mentor Who Isn’t Fake and Genuinely Wants to See You Succeed

Next, let’s quickly talk about mentorship.

I truly believe community is so important when you are running your own freelance business. In the beginning, you will have lots of questions. For example:

• What is the difference between Fiverr, Fiverr Business, and Fiverr Pro?
• How do I create gigs that sell?
• Should my prices be low, high, or match my competitors?
• Do I need a portfolio?
• When should I expect to land my first job?
• What is a “niche?”
• How do I respond to a positive or negative review?

Phew…

It’s a ton of information to have to research and absorb all by yourself, I know. That’s why I highly recommend networking with 2–3 freelance writers who have been successfully doing the Fiverr thing for a while.

But a word of warning!

Unfortunately, the internet is full of scammers. There is no shortage of fake gurus who will try to sell you a useless fluff course, eBook, coaching package, etc. promising instant overnight moneymaking success. Sadly, the legitimate mentors often get lost in the shuffle.
